Oneonta Goes Undefeated at Red Dragons Invitational

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team wrapped up the Red Dragons Invitational with wins over Geneseo and Baruch on Saturday to move to 4-0 on the season. The Red Dragons first defeated the Knights 3-0 and then downed the Bearcats 3-2 in the afternoon match.

Oneonta downed Geneseo 25-13, 25-19, and 25-11. In the first set, senior Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) spurred a 5-0 run with two kills by senior Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia) to take a 7-2 lead. McCabe knocked in an ace, and a kill from junior Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) gave Oneonta an 11-4 lead. Another McCabe kill pushed the Oneonta lead to 20-11, and the Red Dragons closed out on a 5-1 span to secure the first set.

Geneseo went up 2-0 in the second before Oneonta rattled off a 7-0 run with kills from junior Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac)m Kendrick and freshman Layla Pertchik (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs). The Knights fought back to tie 7-7. The Red Dragons regained the lead at 14-9, but the Knights cut the lead to one following two kills from Sydney Leigh-Manuell. Oneonta closed out on a 7-1 run, capped off with an ace from junior Lillian Slattery (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) to go up 2-0.

Oneonta went ahead 22-9 in the third set. Sophomore Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) knocked in a kill to make it 23-10, and Kendrick hit a kill before a final Geneseo error sealed the sweep.

Kendrick led the team with ten kills, while Welsh added eight kills. McCabe tallied six kills and four aces. Freshman Cadence Meltz (Highland, NY/Highland) added four aces, and Landversicht led the team with three blocks. Pertchik dished out 27 assists, and senior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior) had 14 digs.

In the second match, Baruch took the second and third sets before Oneonta won 25-10 in the fourth. The Bearcats took a 3-1 lead before a 7-0 run by the Red Dragons. Landversicht hit a kill to push the lead to 12-5, and Oneonta scored seven straight to push the lead to 19-6. Kills from Welsh and Kendrick in the final 4-0 run forced a fifth set.

After Baruch tied 8-8 in the fifth, the Red Dragons closed out on a 7-0 run with three kills by Landversicht and another from senior Sabrina Squicciarini (Manorville, NY/St. Anthony's) to win 15-8.

Landversicht led the team with 11 kills and four blocks. Kendrick added eight kills, and Welsh had seven. Pertchik had 32 assists and 12 digs. Moller led the team with 13 digs.

Oneonta next hosts Delhi on Wed. Sept. 3 at 6 p.m.
