ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's lacrosse team suffered an 18-6 loss to Clarkson on Thursday afternoon. The Golden Knights move to 3-0, while the Red Dragons fall to 0-2.
Clarkson scored five unanswered goals to open the first quarter, two of which came from Madelynn Barnum. At 8:29, after Clarkson won the draw control, senior goalkeeper Julia Hawkins (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) stopped a shot from Brooklynne Perrigo. Oneonta cleared, and senior Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) scored at 6:57 to get the Red Dragons on the board. Moore scored at 3:06 on a free position to cut the lead to 5-2. The Golden Knights closed out the first quarter with three more goals to take an 8-2 lead.
Clarkson went ahead 10-2 following a pair of goals from Gabby Cranfield. Moore recorded a hat trick at 8:18 with another free-position goal. Oneonta scored again four minutes later when Moore assisted on a goal from senior Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook). Clarkson added two more before the half to lead 12-4 at the break.
The Golden Knights outscored the Red Dragons 4-1 in the third, with senior Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) scoring in the final seconds to make it 16-5.
Senior Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) added one more free-position goal early in the fourth. Downey scored again at 6:02, and Doherty netted the final goal to close the game at 18-8.
Moore finished with three goals and one assist, while Doherty had two goals and an assist. Downey scored twice with two ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
Barnum had a game-high five goals and 11 draw controls. Perrigo, Annie Dufault, and Cranfield each recorded hat tricks.
Hawkins made seven saves in goal, while Jennaca McGill had one.
Oneonta next hosts Utica on Sat. Mar. 8 at 1 p.m.
