UTICA, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's track & field began the outdoor season at Sunday's Utica Almost Spring Invite, with the Red Dragons placing first in seven events. Additionally, senior Gabe Burns (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead) broke the facility record in the 10,000, while fifth-year Jonthomas Bierman (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) broke it in the 5,000-meter race.
Burns ran a personal best of 31:57.43 to win the 10,000-meter race, and fifth-year John Balk, Jr. (Suffern, NY/Suffern) took second at 32:29.75. Sophomore Chris Schimkus (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:57.92.
In the 1,500-meter, freshman Jonathan McGwyne-Dantis (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee) crossed seventh at 4:27.29, while sophomore Colin Gerbsch (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) placed eighth at 4:27.70.
Junior Tariq Earl (Centereach, NY/Centereach) won the 110-meter hurdles with a 15.68. Sophomore Jackson Sergeant (Pearl River, NY/Clarkstown South) ran a 17.05 for fourth place.
Junior Cam Spears (Bronx, NY/Monroe Woodbury) took fifth in the 400-meter dash at 52.31, and Gerbsch finished ninth at 53.24.
Freshman Justin Berkowitz (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) earned first in the 400-meter hurdles at 59.50.
Bierman capped off the track events with a first-place finish in the 5,000-meter race. He ran a personal best of 15:00.03.
Oneonta had three finishers in the top five of the hammer throw. Senior Sawyer Eckberg (Maryland, NY/Laurens-Milford) took third at 46.53 meters, while senior Marco Altieri (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island) placed fourth at 46.51 meters. Sophomore Elijah Cruz (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush Central) threw 43.60 meters for fifth place.
Sophomore Justin Baldwin (Cato, NY/Cato-Meridian) won the discus at 38.95 meters, and sophomore Connor Vredenburgh (Bainbridge, NY/Bainbridge-Guilford) placed sixth at 33.47 meters.
Junior Drew Obernesser (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) grabbed second in the javelin with a throw of 42.85 meters. Altieri took fourth at 40.19 meters.
The Red Dragons took the top two spots in the long jump. Sophomore Isaiah Slater (Brooklyn, NY/John F. Kennedy) won at 6.76 meters, and freshman Ayobami Adebayo (Long Island, NY/Longwood) was second at 6.56 meters. Junior Josh Jerome (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) hit 6.47 meters for fourth, while freshman Gabriel Schoonmaker () was seventh at 6.29 meters. Sophomore Thomas Pinkowski cleared 6.26 meters for eighth overall.
Ayobami also placed second in the high jump at 1.79 meters.
