HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The Oneonta women's tennis team traveled to Hilton Head, South Carolina for spring break last week. Oneonta fell short in a close match to Baldwin Wallace, 4-3, then bested Western New England, 6-1. The Red Dragons improved their record to 5-9 overall.

Oneonta fell in all three doubles matches as Baldwin Wallace gained the doubles match point. Junior
Kelly Hayes (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) and freshman
Jaila Killingbeck (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) battled Gillian Brown and Samantha Thielen into a tie breaker on the No. 3 court, but Brown and Thielen came away with the match, 7-6 (7-0). Sophomore
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) and freshman
Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) came up short on the No. 1 court, 6-4.
The two teams split the singles matches and the Yellow Jackets held onto the match. Junior
Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) defeated Olivia Koutouras in split sets. She fell in the first set then won the second set and the tiebreaker for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 win. Plue outlasted Saraphina Groh on the No. 3 court in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, and freshman
Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y./Islip) beat Gillian on the No. 4 court in straight 6-3 sets.
Oneonta 6, Western New England 1
The Red Dragons swept the doubles matches for the doubles point over the Golden Bears. Copp and Cripe teamed up on the No. 2 court and bageled Yasmine Giacalone and Gianna Arace, 6-0. Plue and Peck bested Emma Miller and Sydney Shepard on the No. 1 court, 6-3, and Hayes and Killingbeck battled on the No. 3 court for a 7-5 win over Kelsey Wyse and Leina Salomon.
Oneonta continued their dominance in singles play and earned five of the six singles courts. Peck and Cripe each won in double bagel style against their opponents on the No. 2 and No. 4 courts, respectively. Copp walked away with a 6-2, 6-1 win on the No. 1 court over Shepard, and Plue defeated Kayla Ledoux on the No. 3 court, 6-0, 6-2. Hayes secured court No. 5 after a battle against Wyse. Hayes took the first set 6-4, then Wyse forced a set tiebreaker in a close second set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5). The Red Dragon got the victory after a back-and-forth set tiebreaker to win the match, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 12-10.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Thursday, April 3, for a road match against Union at 4 pm.
