Oneonta Travels to Cortland for SUNYAC First Round on Feb. 25

ONEONTA, N.Y. - After earning the sixth seed in the SUNYAC Tournament, the Oneonta men's basketball team heads to face third-seeded Cortland on Tues. Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Whitney T. Corey '43 Gymnasium.

Oneonta reached the SUNYAC Tournament for the sixth straight season and was 14-11 overall and 9-9 in conference play. Cortland finished the regular season at 14-11 and 13-5 in the conference. Cortland swept the season series, but both games were decided by ten or fewer points.

The last time the two met, Cortland returned with a 69-61 win. Oneonta led by seven at halftime before Cortland outscored the Red Dragons 42-27 in the second half. Sophomore Kobe Long (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) led Oneonta with 22 points with six three-pointers, while senior Zyeir Lawrence (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) scored 16 with nine boards.

After rejoining the Red Dragons, Long has led the team in scoring by averaging 16.1 points per game, shooting .427 from the field and .339 for threes. Senior Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds) is second in scoring (13.0 ppg), assists (44), and steals (27). Freshman Cam LaClair (Selkirk, NY/Bethlehem) helped the Oneonta offense to 9.5 points a game and averaged 6.4 rebounds. He leads the team with 28 steals. Lawrence has a team-high 20 blocks with 5.5 rebounds a game.

Cortland features a balanced offense with three players averaging double digits. Kendeall Arcuri (14.3, 6.1 rpg), Aaron Coston (14.0, 5.7 rpg), and Joel Davis (10.4 ppg, 10.0 rpg) lead the way. Davis accounted for 37 blocks and 26 steals, while Coston added 30 blocks and 53 assists.

As a team, Oneonta averages 72.6 points per game on 41.9 percent shooting from the field. Cortland averages 67.8 points on a 41.7 field goal percentage. Cortland has the conference's top defense, limiting opponents to 65.9 points per game.

The winner of this game advances to the SUNYAC Semifinals to face No. 2 Oswego at New Paltz on Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m.
