Oneonta Men's Swim & Dive Takes Second at Snow Flurries

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's swimming & diving team concluded the Cortland Snow Flurries Invitational on Saturday evening. The Red Dragons took second out of five teams with 642.5 points, while Cortland won the meet with 1118.5.

Saturday's session began with the 400-yard medley, where the Red Dragons placed fourth. Fifth-year Jack Humphrey, senior David Scott (South Ozone Park, NY/), junior Andrew Capella (Glenville, NY/Burnt-Hills-Ballston Lake), and sophomore Russell Cheng (Westchester, NY/Ardsley) finished at 4:11.59.

In the 100-yard butterfly, junior Nick Rhodes (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) took fourth at 55.12, while senior Calvin Hitzschke (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy & Central School) touched fifth at 55.77. Cheng placed ninth at 58.94.

Fifth-year Maddox Aramini (Cooperstown, NY/Cherry Valley-Springfield) earned sixth in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:54.85. Junior Gavin Weseman (Olean, NY/Olean) swam a 1:58.80 to place ninth overall.

Junior Cosmo Martinelli (Albany, NY/Albany) took fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:05.77, while senior Brendan Heaney (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks Central) was seventh (1:07.20). Humphrey placed eighth at 1:10.03. Freshman Dylan Harrison (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) swam 1:12.28 in the 100-yard backstroke for a sixth-place finish.

Oneonta's 200-yard freestyle relay of Martinelli, Rhodes, Aramini, and Hitzschke placed second at 1:30.71.

In the 1,650-yard freestyle, freshman Brendan Kliment (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) earned fourth overall at 21:28.57.

The Red Dragons performed well in the 100-yard backstroke, with three swimmers in the top four. Hitzschke was second (50.41), Martinelli was third (50.87), and Aramini took fourth (51.01).

Hitzschke continued with a seventh-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a 2:14.78, and Cheng was eighth at 2:23.01.

The meet wrapped up with the 400-yard freestyle relay, where Aramini, Hitzschke, Martinelli, and Rhodes took third at 3:22.68.

Sophomore Ben Heyman (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) scored 342.08 points to finish second in the one-meter dive.

Oneonta has a break until they resume dual meet against Cortland at home on Jan. 23.
