Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

King's Second Half Run Downs Oneonta

WILKES-BARRE, PA - After being a one-point game at halftime, King's (PA) outscored the Oneonta men's basketball team 58-47 in the second half to secure a 100-88 win on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons fall to 2-3 overall, while the Monarchs move to 2-4.

"Give King's credit. They played extremely hard," said head coach Cameron Conover. "We couldn't guard them tonight, and we are not going to win many games when we give up 100 points."

Inside baskets from senior Delano Knox (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) and junior Nicholas Cortez (Harlem, NY/Forest Hills) put Oneonta ahead 8-5 early in the first half. King's responded with a 5-0 run, capped off with a triple from Jaden Hall. The Red Dragons used a 9-0 run with a Knox three-pointer to take a 17-7 lead at 13:06.

Oneonta continued to build a lead with sophomore Nate Cohen (Somers, NY/Somers) hitting a trey at 10:04 to push the Red Dragons' lead to 25-12. Oneonta held a double-digit lead until the final five minutes of the half, when Hall spurred an 8-0 run to cut the Oneonta lead to three points. The Monarchs kept hitting threes to pull back in and tied following a jump shot by Matt Christian. Freshman Carlos Almanzar (Brooklyn, NY/John Jay Campus) scored inside with 18 seconds left to take a 41-39 lead, but a final three-pointer from Christian gave the Monarchs a 42-41 halftime lead.

The first few minutes of the second half went back-and-forth with King's taking a 55-51 lead following a layup from Jake Karnish. Cohen knocked down a triple at 15:23, and a basket by freshman Deion Mitchel-Murray retook the Oneonta lead at 56-55.

Four ties followed until Hall knocked down another three-pointer at 8:28 to take a 72-68 lead. The Monarchs never relinquished the lead and capitalized on converting free throws to pull away. Ben Rodner-Tims scored an and-one to give King's an 88-77 advantage at 3:42. The Monarchs made six free throws in the final minutes to pull away for the victory.

Almanzar led Oneonta with a career-high 17 points and eight rebounds. Knox added 16 points and seven boards. Cortez finished with 14 points, and freshman Cam LaClair (Selkirk, NY/Bethlehem) had 12 points. Cohen added 15 points with four three-pointers off the bench.

King's had two 20-point scorers. Hall led the game with 29 points, while Rodner-Tims had 25 points and five rebounds. Karnish finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Oneonta next heads to the Northern Classic in Montreal to face Division I Colgate on Saturday, November 29, at 5 p.m.
