ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta field hockey team came up short in their non-conference match against Skidmore, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon on All College Field. Skidmore recorded a pair of goals in the first half then senior
Molly Miller (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) scored to trim the deficit in the fourth period, but Oneonta was unable to tie the match in the closing minutes. The result moved the Red Dragons to 7-4 on the season, while the Thoroughbreds improved to 7-6 overall.
Halfway through the first period, at 7:45, Skidmore got on the board when Ella Costa redirected Gianna DiGioacchino's shot into the cage. At 26:30 in the second period, Molly Van Vranken received the ball from Mia Angwin and scored to extend the Thoroughbreds lead. Junior
Alexandra Howell (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) and sophomore
Miranda Colacchio (Lagrange, N.Y.) each had a chance to get Oneonta on the board in the second period, however Allison Morgan saved both shots and kept it a 2-0 game entering halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Red Dragons cut the deficit to one at 56:37 in the fourth period. Miller took a penalty corner for Oneonta and sent a pass up to the top of the shooting circle to junior
Abigail Draper (Remsen, NY/Holland Patent). Draper passed it to the right side to Howell, and she took a shot that was redirected by Miller for the goal, her fourth goal of the season. Unfortunately, the Red Dragons could not create a scoring opportunity to tie the game in the final moments.
Senior
Maura Leib (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) finished with five saves for Oneonta, while Morgan ended with five stops for the Thoroughbreds.
Skidmore outshot Oneonta 10-8 in total shots, 7-6 in shots on goal, while Oneonta held a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners.
The Red Dragons are on the road for their next game on Saturday, October 11, when they travel to Oswego for a SUNYAC matchup against the Lakers at 3 pm.
