ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's swimming & diving team opened the year at the Hartwick Relays on Sunday, placing second out of three teams. The Red Dragons won six relay races and scored 132 points, while Hartwick won with 158.
Oneonta started by winning the 400-yard medley relay with seniors Brendan Heaney (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks Central), Delroy Tyrrell (Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago/), Calvin Hitzschke (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy & Central School), and junior Nick Rhodes (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) swimming a 3:42.72. The 300-yard breaststroke relay of Heaney sophomore Bastion Dudley and junior Andrew Capella (Glenville, NY/Burnt-Hills-Ballston Lake) grabbed second at 3:28.72. Hitzschke, Rhodes, and Tyrrell won the 300-yard butterfly relay at 2:46.12.
In the 850-yard freestyle relay, senior Maddox Aramini (Cooperstown, NY/Cherry Valley-Springfield), juniors Cosmo Martinelli (Albany, NY/Albany), Gavin Weseman (Olean, NY/Olean), and Capella took second at 8:49.73. The Red Dragons recorded another victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay (Russell Cheng (Westchester, NY/Ardsley), Rhodes, Martinelli, Tyrrell) at 1:31.20.
Oneonta tallied a second-place performance in the 600-yard medley relay with Aramini, Dudley, and Cheng swimming a 7:10.88.
Martinelli, Heaney, junior Colin Ringwood (Auburn, NY/Auburn), and sophomore Dylan Harrison (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) won the 200-yard medley relay at 1:47.52. The 400-yard freestyle relay group (Ringwood, Weseman, Aramini, and Martinelli) claimed first at 3:31.12, and Oneonta concluded the relays with a first-place finish in the 800-yard medley relay (Rhodes, Heaney, Hitzschke, and Cheng) at 8:49.41.
Freshman Mark Varga (Westchester, NY)s placed second in the one-meter dive with 154.05 points.
Oneonta next hosts Oswego on Saturday, October 18, at 1 p.m.
