Women’s Tennis Suffers Setback Against Alfred

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's tennis team was tripped up against Alfred, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in non-conference play at Dr. Heissan Tennis Courts. Sophomores Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) earned the team's match points with their wins in singles play as the result moved the Red Dragons to 4-7 this season and the Saxons to 10-4 overall.

Cripe had the upper hand in her singles match against Alyssa Seegert and defeated Seegert in straight sets on the No. 2 court, 6-3, 6-1. The win improved Cripe's single record to 5-5 in the season.

Plue dealt with some adversity on the No. 3 singles court after she dropped the first set to Becca Epping, 6-2. The sophomore collected herself and outmaneuvered Epping in the second and third sets to win the match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. The victory elevated Plue's singles record to 6-3 this season.

The Saxons came away with the remaining singles courts. Junior Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) had a close first set against Alina Zabihailo on court No. 1, but Peck fell short in forcing a tiebreaker and Zabihailo earned the set then she took the second for a 7-5, 6-2, decision. Freshman Trinity Lyons (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) bested Anastasia Shaw in the first set on court No. 6, then Shaw took the final two sets for the match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Kiersten Rufrano (Oneonta, NY) battled her way into a tiebreaker in her first set against Allison Windisch on court No. 4, however Windisch got the better of Rufrano in the tiebreak then the second set for a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 final. Freshman Dakota Jimenez (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) fell to Alexis Gits in straight sets on court No. 5.

Alfred started the match by taking all three doubles courts. Freshman Ashley Glaviano (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) and Rufrano came up short to Gits and Windisch on court No. 3, 6-4. Peck and Cripe fell in their match on court No. 1 to Zabihailo and Madsen, 6-2, while Plue and Jimenez also dropped their doubles match, 6-2, to Epping and Seegert on court No. 2.

The Red Dragons are back in action for the fall finale on Saturday, October 18, against Marywood at 11 am at Dr. Heissan Tennis Courts.
