CANTON, N.Y. - Four Red Dragons scored in double digits as the Oneonta men's basketball team picked up a 76-64 win over Canton on Tuesday evening. Oneonta has won five straight and moves to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the SUNYAC. The Roos fall to 0-9 and 0-2 in the conference.
"Tonight was a good win," said head coach Cameron Conover. "We started slow, especially defensively, and then we got determined and played great defense in the second half."
Canton jumped out to a 5-0 lead before junior Delano Knox (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) got the Red Dragons on the board following a layup at 17:41. Senior Xavier Hill (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) drained a three-pointer to cut the lead to two before the Roos used a 4-0 span to lead 11-5. Hill knocked down another triple at 15:29, but back-to-back threes from Jevonte Williams and Nate Cohen pushed the Canton lead to nine.
The Roos took a 25-13 lead following a three-pointer from Hansen Bagdonas and a Williams layup at 11:22. Freshman Cam LaClair (Selkirk, NY/Bethlehem) answered with a triple to start a 9-0 Oneonta run to bring the score within three. Canton built back to a seven-point advantage before freshman Shea Barber (Wells Bridge, NY/Unatego) converted an and-one at 6:58 to make it 29-25.
Kevin Goode, Jr. scored inside to give Canton a 31-28 lead, but a triple from LaClair tied 31-31 with 2:54 left in the first half. Layups from junior Tyler Harts (Queens, NY/Sewanaka) and senior Zyeir Lawrence (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) gave Oneonta its first lead at 35-31. A final three from Bagdonas made it a one-point game heading into the break.
Baskets from Knox and junior Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds) gave Oneonta a five-point lead. The Red Dragons used a 12-0 run to build a 51-36 lead at 14:22. Oneonta led by 17 following baskets from Lawrence and LaClair. Canton never pulled with single digits, as the Oneonta defense held Canton to 32.1 percent shooting in the second half.
Hill picked up a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Lawrence had 13 points, five assists, three steals, two blocks, and two rebounds. LaClair scored 13 points with two steals off the bench, and Harts finished with 11 points, six boards, and two assists. Castillo had nine points, seven steals, and seven assists.
Bryon Streb led Canton with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Goode had 15 points and four boards. Nate Cohen added 14 points, six rebounds, and two assists.
Oneonta returns home to play New Paltz on Sat. Jan. 11 at 4 p.m.
