Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Red Dragons Overpower Pioneers, 6-1

UTICA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team went on the road and defeated Utica University, 6-1, in non-conference play Wednesday evening. Four players from Oneonta won in doubles and singles play. The Red Dragons dropped two matches by default, however, despite the injuries, the team dominated the other courts for the victory and improved to 3-2 overall, while the Pioneers fell to 0-5 this season. Oneonta had four players win their doubles and singles matches.

The Red Dragons had to win the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles courts for the doubles point as the Pioneers won the No. 3 court by default. Junior Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and sophomore Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) teamed up on the ones court and bageled Kimora-Lee Simmons and Paetra Heeren, 6-0. Junior Kelly Hayes (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) paired up with freshman Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and clinched the doubles point on the twos court, defeating Callie Ott and Lyndsey Tiedemann, 6-3.

Oneonta kept momentum on their side and won five courts in singles play, while Utica gained their match point with a win by default on the No. 6 court. Haley defeated Heeren on the No. 1 court, 6-4, 6-2, and Copp shut down Simmons on the No. 2 court, 6-0, 6-1. Both Copp and Haley improved to 3-1 this season in singles play.

Plue routed Ott on the No. 3 court, 6-2, 6-0, to win three of her past four singles matches. Freshman Kyra Murray (Warwick, N.Y.) secured a victory on the No. 5 court over Victoria Elefante, 6-3, 6-4, for her second straight win in singles play. Hayes had a tightly contested match on the No. 4 court against Lyndsey Tiedemann that went into tiebreakers in each set. Tiedemann took the first set with a 7-3 tiebreaker, then Hayes won the second set tiebreaker, 7-1, to force the super tiebreaker. The back-and-forth battle ended in favor of Hayes who ran away with the super tiebreaker to win the match, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-1), 1-0 (10-3).

The Red Dragons are back in action for three straight days of SUNYAC play at the Binghamton Tennis Center starting on Thursday, October 3, against Cortland at 12 pm.
