Women's Tennis Shuts Out Utica in Season Opener

Kaitlyn Jones Records First Collegiate Victory in Red Dragons Bagel Win Over Pioneers

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's tennis team started their season off in dominant fashion defeating Utica in a 7-0 shutout, Wednesday afternoon at Dr. Heissan '63 Tennis Courts. Oneonta won six courts without losing a game, dropping only a total of five games to the Pioneers throughout the match. Four Red Dragons won in both doubles and singles play, including sophomore Ashley Glaviano (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove), who didn't lose a single game in either match. Senior Kaitlyn Jones (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central) recorded her first collegiate victory with a win in singles play as Oneonta starts the year 1-0.

"Great team win today for the first match of the season," said Head Coach Brian Roser. "We were able to start eight different women, and they all secured the win. Congratulations to Kaitlyn Jones (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central) for picking up her first collegiate victory at six singles today!"

Oneonta started the match by sweeping all three doubles courts, with two bagel wins, for the doubles point. Senior Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) and junior Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y./Islip) upended Lyndsey Tiedemann and Averi Kraeger on the number one court, 6-0, while sophomore duo Glaviano and Dakota Jimenez (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) blanked Saige Burton and Hannah Slater on court three. Junior Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and sophomore Kiersten Rufrano (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) bested Hannah Loebbaka and Andrea May on court two, 6-1, to end the doubles portion.

In singles play, Plue, Glaviano, Jones, and sophomore Trinity Lyons (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) all defeated their respective opponents in double bagel style, 6-0, 6-0. Jones' first collegiate shutout and win was against Burton on court six. Plue picked up her win on court two against Kraeger. Glaviano cruised past May on court four, while Lyons shut down Eh Nay Than on court five.

Peck dropped only a game in the first set of her singles match on court one before she bageled Tiedemann in set two for the 6-1, 6-0 victory. Rufrano completed the Red Dragons sweep with a controlling straight set win against Loebbaka on court three, 6-1, 6-2.

"I'm looking forward to carrying this momentum into the weekend!" Coach Roser concluded.

The Red Dragons are on the road for their next match on Friday, September 4, to take on Alfred University at 4 pm.
