ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team went 1-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons (6-7) opened with a 3-0 sweep against Marywood (6-5) and then fell 3-0 to Alfred State.
Oneonta won 25-18, 25-15, and 25-14 against the Pacers in the first match. Freshman McKenna Law (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) recorded a match-high nine kills, while juniors Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia High School/East Greenbush) and Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) notched five each. Kendrick added three aces and five digs. Spano had four blocks. Freshman Hailey Herrera (Brooklyn, NY/Park Slope Collegiate) grabbed 22 assists, and junior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior High School) grabbed 22 digs.
Marywood's Casey Hagerstrom and Libby Smith each had four kills. Jaedyn Laws sent in two aces and seven assists. Peyton Fischer had 18 digs.
After the Pacers took a 7-5 lead in the first set, the Red Dragons rattled off a 4-0 run with a kill and block from Spano. Marywood would tie 17-17 before Kendrick knocked in a kill to start a 6-0 run. A pair of Pacers' errors sealed the Oneonta set victory.
Oneonta took a 12-8 lead in the second following a McKenna kill. Another 6-0 run with kills from Spano and freshman Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) made it 18-9. Oneonta never lost the lead, and the Red Dragons took the set, closing out on a 3-0 span.
Oneonta used an 11-0 run in the third set to jump ahead 17-5. Marywood pulled within nine before kills by Gianna May (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) and Autumn Singleton (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) completed the sweep.
In the second match, Alfred State handled Oneonta 25-22, 25-19, and 25-23.
Kendrick and Law tallied five assists each, while Moller had three aces. Spano had four blocks, while Herrera made 18 assists. Freshman Zoe Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) had 12 digs, while Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior High School) had 11 digs.
The Pioneers' Racquel Gerstenberger finished with 16 kills, 14 digs, and an ace. Alayna Tomlinson had 11 kills and 14 digs. Nayomie Ferrer finished with 27 assists.
Oneonta next competes at the Misericordia Cougar Clash on Fri. Sept. 27. The Red Dragons face Centenary at 4 p.m. and Alfred at 6 p.m.
