ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team went 1-1 in a couple of weekday matches, dropping to New Paltz in SUNYAC play, 7-0, on Wednesday, then bounced back and defeated SUNY Delhi, 5-2, Thursday afternoon. Freshman
Kyra Murray (Warwick, N.Y.) recorded her first collegiate victory in her singles match against Delhi. The Red Dragons moved to 2-2 on the season, 0-2 in SUNYAC play, the Hawks went to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play, and the Broncos fell to 2-4 on the year.
Oneonta 0, New Paltz 7
Oneonta dealt with a few injuries throughout the week, which allowed New Paltz to win the No. 3 doubles, No. 5 singles and No. 6 singles matches by default. Junior
Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and sophomore
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) were bested by Nina Genzone and Isabel van der Veen on the No. 1 doubles court, 6-1. Freshman
Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and Murray fell to Sydney Sladicka and Angelica Gabriel on the No. 2 doubles court, 6-0.
Peck and Plue had the closest matches in singles play, however New Paltz took them both. Peck dropped to Sladicka on the No. 1 court, 6-2, 6-2, and Plue was defeated by Amirah Alston on the No. 3 court, 6-1, 6-3.
Oneonta 5, Delhi 2
Delhi took the No. 3 doubles court by default, however the Oneonta's one and two doubles teams fought for the victories to secure the doubles point. Junior
Kelly Hayes (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) teamed up with Plue on the No. 2 court and goosed Juliana Plue and Alyssa Gregorius, 6-0. The duo Copp and Peck were on the No. 1 court and had a tight match with Hallee Bodo and Hannah Shafer, but Copp and Peck came away with the win, 7-5.
The Red Dragons secured four wins in singles play. Murray recorded her first win in double bagel style on the No. 5 court over Virginia Savage, 6-0, 6-0. Plue also secured her match with a couple of bagels against Juliana Plue on the No. 3 court. Copp was beating Shafer, 3-0, on the No. 2 court before Shafer suffered an injury and had to forfeit the match. Peck battled with Bodo on the No. 1 court and went into a tiebreaker. Peck won the first set, 6-3, before Bodo took the second set, 6-2. In the tiebreaker, Peck overpowered Bodo and won 10-3.
A few of the Red Dragons will travel to Skidmore College to compete in the ITA Northeast Regional Championships starting on Saturday, September 21, at 9 am. The team's next match is against Utica on Wednesday, September 25, at 3:30 pm on the Dr. Heissan '63 Tennis Courts.
