Kelly Hayes (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) clinched the match point for Oneonta in a super tiebreaker set on the No. 4 singles court. Junior
Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and sophomore
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) both won in doubles and singles play as the Red Dragons improved to 1-1 on the season and the Highlanders dropped to 0-5 overall.
Copp and Peck defeated Arija Grant and Alexandria Leary on the No. 1 court in doubles play, 6-1. The Highlanders took the No. 2 and No. 3 matches to win the doubles point. Hayes and freshman
Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) went back-and-forth with Myakay Bartman and Zoe Zachery on the No. 2 court, however Bartman and Zachery took the match, 6-4.
Houghton secured the No. 5 and No. 6 court in singles play for a 3-0 match lead, then Oneonta mounted the comeback. Peck beat Grant in straight sets on the No. 1 court, 6-2, 6-1. Plue recorded her first collegiate victory in match play in straight sets over Clancey Cockle, 6-3, 6-2, on the No. 3 court. Copp improved to 2-0 this season in singles play with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Leary on the No. 2 court.
Hayes went into a tiebreaker in her first set against Bartman on the No. 4 court. She went down 2-6 in the tiebreaker before she came back and won it, 8-6. Bartman forced the super tiebreaker after a 7-5 second set. The tiebreaker went back and forth until Hayes won, 10-8.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Wednesday, September 18, for a SUNYAC match against New Paltz at 3 pm on the Dr. Heissan '63 Tennis Courts.
