SCHENECTADY, N.Y -- The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team dropped their first match of the season at Union, 3-0, Wednesday evening. Junior
Maura Leib (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) finished with 13 saves for Oneonta while Maddie Greco recorded all three goals for Union. The Red Dragons moved to 3-1 on the season and the Garnet Chargers improved to 4-1 overall.
Greco scored the first goal at 2:22 off an assist from Megan Dorsey. Dorsey had a penalty shot opportunity to extend the lead, but Leib made the save. Leib made another handful of saves before Greco scored her second goal at 20:48 in the second period. Junior
Gabby Alfinito (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) made a defensive save in the closing minutes of the first half while Leib made a couple more stops to keep it 2-0 at halftime.
Greco scored the final goal at 52:03 in the final period. Graduate student
Michaela Maniscalco (Northport, N.Y./Northport) recorded the Red Dragons first shot on goal halfway through the third period and had it stopped by Sophie Brady. Maniscalco and junior
Molly Miller (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) had back-to-back shots on goal at 54:10, but both were stopped by Brady. Sophomore
Abigail Draper (Remsen, NY/Holland Patent) and Maniscalco each had a chance to score in the final minute of play, however they came away empty.
Brady had five saves for the Garnet Chargers. Union outshot Oneonta 20-8, 17-5 on target, and had an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday, September 14, for a match at St. John Fisher at 3 pm.
