Women’s Tennis Upends Rutgers-Camden and Farmingdale

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team recorded a pair of non-conference victories against Rutgers-Camden and Farmingdale. The Red Dragons improved to 11-9 on the season while the Raptors dropped to 8-7 and the Rams moved to 11-5 overall. Senior Julia Holtermann (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) and freshman Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) both went undefeated and won four matches over the weekend.

Oneonta 5, Rutgers-Camden 1
Oneonta had a couple dominating wins in doubles play to take a 2-1 lead over Rutgers-Camden. Holtermann and Peck ran the No. 1 court for an 8-2 win over Katie Moore and Ashton Sirko, and senior Brianna Shaw (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) paired up with sophomore Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) on the No. 2 court and defeated Alyssa Peacock and Nicoletta Troilo, 8-1.

Holtermann, Peck, and Copp secured the match for the Red Dragons on the top three singles courts. Holtermann upended Moore on the No. 1 court, 6-3, 6-1, Peck beat Jayde Sue Silva in the twos match, 6-4, 6-2, and Copp cruised past Sirko for a 6-2, 6-1 win on the No. 3 court. Senior Illana Ger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) took set one, 6-1, in her match on the No. 4 court over Peacock, and freshman Rhiannon Axtmann (Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) was ahead in her first set, 5-0, on the No. 6 singles court against Arevalo Zuniga.

Oneonta 6, Farmingdale 3
The Red Dragons fell behind to the Rams, 2-1, after the doubles matches. Holtermann and Peck defeated Lien Collings and MacKenzie Gisler on the ones court, 8-4. Ger and sophomore Kelly Hayes (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) battled against Mikayla DeMaria and Heather McGullam on the No. 3 court, but DeMaria and McGullam sneaked out with the win in a set tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-3).

Oneonta came back from the slim deficit and won five of the six singles matches. Holtermann started it off with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Collings on the No. 1 court. Ger beat DeMaria in straight sets on the No. 5 court, 6-2, 6-4, then Shaw tied the match with her singles victory on the No. 2 court over Amanda Jones, 6-3, 6-4. Peck and Copp wrapped up the match with wins on the No. 3 and No. 4 courts, respectively. Peck won her first set in a tiebreaker before she took the second set versus Gisler for a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory, while Copp outplayed Gabriella Loria for a 6-2, 7-5 win.
