ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team concluded their regular season Monday afternoon and were defeated by Union College, 9-0. The Red Dragons ended the season 11-10 overall while the Garnet Chargers improved to 9-6.
Seniors
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) and
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) battled in their doubles match on the No. 1 court, but Luisa Arizpe-Sierra and Kennedy Alexis walked away with the match, 8-4. Seniors
Illana Ger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) and
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck) fell on the No. 3 court, 8-3, to Sydney Alphabet and Kate Hirnak, and sophomore
Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and freshman
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) were bested on the No. 2 court, 8-2, by Paige Tromblee and Claire Langille.
Copp had the closest singles match on the No. 4 court, though Alexia took the match, 6-3, 6-1. Holtermann fought hard on the No. 1 court, yet Gracie Nicol secured the match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Peck was bested by Skylar Semon on the No. 3 court in straight 6-1 sets, while the other Garnet Chargers recorded at least one 6-0 set in the other singles matches.
The Red Dragons celebrated Senior Day throughout the day and after the match, recognizing and honoring the careers of Holtermann, Ger, Schutte, and Shaw. All four were members of the 2021-22 SUNYAC Championship team, the first SUNYAC title team in the program's history. Holtermann and Schutte were the No. 3 duo for the team in the final against New Paltz, as they also competed and won in singles play. That same season, Holtermann, Schutte, and Shaw each recorded a match win in Oneonta's 5-2 victory against Lebanon Valley College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Schutte and Shaw won on the No. 3 doubles court, while Schutte and Holtermann recorded a win on the No. 3 and No. 6 singles court, respectively.
Oneonta finished as the No. 4 seed in the SUNYAC standings and will face the No. 1 seed, New Paltz, in the SUNYAC Tournament Semifinals on Friday, April 26, at 1 pm.
