ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â Senior Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) netted four goals as the Oneonta women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener 13-7 to Rochester on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons fall to 0-1, while the Yellowjackets move to 1-0.Â
Rochester took the opening draw control and managed three shots in first two minutes. Senior goalkeeper Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) stopped a shot from Gracie Giannettino, but Oneonta turned the ball over on the clear. Lorelei King picked up Emily Schillinger for the opening goal at 12:28. Oneonta responded less than a minute later when Mancini netted a free position goal to tie 1-1.Â
The Yellowjackets scored three straight goals, with two coming from Giannettino, to go ahead 4-1. Oneonta found the back of the net two times in the final minute of the first quarter, with seniors Marissa Evans (Jamesville, NY/LaFayette) and Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) cutting the lead to 4-3.
Rochester's Alyssa Gorny scored two straight goals to start the second quarter. Giannettino added another at 10:48, and King scored thirty seconds later to take an 8-3 lead. Mancini scored the following two Oneonta goals to cut the lead to three, but Gorny added her third goal at 2:07 to make it 9-5 at halftime.Â
Oneonta was held to two goals in the second half, with Mancini scoring again in the third. Gorny scored to start the fourth quarter to take a 13-6 lead, and Evans tallied the game's final goal to make it 13-7.Â
Mancini finished with four goals on seven shots, while Evans added two goals and four draw controls. Junior Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) had two assists, two ground balls, three draw controls, and one caused turnover. Senior Antonia Buscemi caused two turnovers.
Gorny finished with six goals, one assist, and three ground balls. Giannettino scored four goals and an assist, while Schillinger scored two goals.Â
Oneonta begins a four-game road trip next, starting with traveling to face RPI on Tues. Feb. 27 at 3 p.m.
