ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's basketball team clinched the sixth seed of the SUNYAC Tournament after finishing the regular season at 12-13 overall and 9-9 in the conference. The Red Dragons reach the postseason for the fifth straight season and travel to face Brockport on Tue. Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
Tickets for the game are $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-12 (cash only at the door; no advance sales). Children four and under, along with students from SUNYAC schools (with ID), are free.
Sophomore Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds) leads the Oneonta offense, averaging 14.7 points a game while shooting .433 percent from the field. Castillo averages 4.7 rebounds, leads the team with 25 steals, and is second with 56 assists. Junior Xavier Hill (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) leads the team with eight double-doubles while averaging 13.5 points and 8.5 rebounds. Hill shoots .439 percent from the field and is shooting .358 percent from three-point range. Senior Graham Wooden (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) has been the Red Dragons' top playmaker with a team-high 60 assists. He averages 10.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and shoots .364 percent for three-pointers.Â
As a team, Oneonta features the conference's second-best offense with 78.8 points a game and tops the SUNYAC with 44.7 rebounds a game.Â
Brockport locked up the third seed and finished the season at 16-8 and 12-6 in the SUNYAC. Tony Arnold (12.5ppg), Caquan Wester (10.3ppg), and Alex Tavarez (10.3ppg) are the three leading scorers for the Green and Gold this season. Wester has also been the team's top rebounder, snagging 7.9 boards a game. Arnold makes plays on both ends of the floor, totaling team-highs of 78 assists and 47 steals.
Shooting-wise, Zachary Rice's 30 made 3-pointers lead the team. He also is shooting 76.2% at the foul line for first on the squad. Wester has 22 makes from long range, while Nathaniel Gordon has 19 3-pointers on .514 percent shooting from deep.Â
No. 4 Cortland hosts No. 5 Plattsburgh on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Following the first round games, No. 1 Oswego and No. 2 New Paltz await the winners for the SUNYAC Semifinals on Fri. Feb. 23. The Semifinals and Finals will be hosted by top-seeded Oswego. Â
