POTSDAM, N.Y. -Â Potsdam's Colton Huestis hit a triple with six seconds remaining to give the Bears an 86-84 win over the Oneonta men's basketball team on Friday evening. The Red Dragons fall to 12-12 overall and 9-8 in the SUNYAC, while the Bears snap an 11-game losing streak and move to 3-21 and 2-14 in the conference.Â
Oneonta had a sluggish start, falling behind 17-6 following an and-one play from Potsdam's Nicholas Cortez. Back-to-back jumpers from sophomore Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds) and a Tyler Harts (Queens, NY/Sewanaka) layup brought Oneonta within seven. Junior PJ Laidley (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Pembroke Pines Charter) scored inside off an Elijah Morris (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon) assist at 12:35, and then Harts scored again to cut the lead to 19-16.Â
The Bears responded with a 7-2 run until freshman Mohammad Sylla (Bronx, NY/Darrow) drained a three-pointer at 10:25 to make it 26-21. Castillo and Laidley free throws made it a one-point game at 8:44 before Jeff Williamson scored inside to put the Bears up 30-27. Oneonta tied 30-30 following a Daniel Penubothula (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream Central) three at 7:50, but an 8-2 Bears' span kept Potsdam ahead.Â
Senior Graham Wooden (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) scored inside to start a 9-0 Oneonta to take their first lead of the night at 41-38. Potsdam's Isaac Oduro, Jr. scored before the break to make it 41-40.
Neither side pulled away early in the second half until Oneonta drained threes from Catillo, and junior Xavier Hill (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) pushed Oneonta up 54-47. The Red Dragons built up to an 11-point lead at 15:46. Potsdam rattled off a 12-0 run immediately after and retook the advantage at 61-60. Baskets from Harts and Wooden kept a narrow Oneonta lead, but another Potsdam run gave the Bears a 72-66 lead with 8:07 remaining.Â
Oneonta fought back to tie at 72-72 before Parker Kelly hit a trey at 5:38. The Red Dragons looked to take charge following an 8-0 span with four points from Wooden.Â
With under 30 seconds left, Castillo converted a pair of free throws to take an 84-83 lead. Hiestis took a long-range three with six seconds remaining and hit to give the Bears a two-point lead. Oneonta had a final attempt but failed to convert.Â
Castillo led the team with 21 points and grabbed three rebounds, while Wooden scored 13 with nine boards. Hill added 11 points with 15 rebounds.
Huestis netted a game-high 32 points, while Parker had 17 points and seven rebounds. Williamson netted 16 points with seven boards.
Oneonta wraps up the regular season on Sat. Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. at Plattsburgh.Â
