Five Men’s Soccer Members Receive All-Region III Honors

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The United Soccer Coaches released their Division III Men's Soccer All-Region teams and Oneonta men's soccer had five athletes selected. Seniors Derek Marques (Somers, N.Y./Somers), Nate Masucci (Greece, N.Y./Greece Athena), Luigi Prosperi (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook), Ali Somow (Utica, N.Y./Proctor), and sophomore Adrian Matute (Islip, N.Y./Islip) were the five Red Dragons named to the All-Region III teams.

Somow was tabbed to the Region III First Team, Marques and Prosperi garnered Third Team honors, and Masucci and Matute received Fourth Team recognition. It is the second straight season Somow has earned All-Region, the other four Red Dragons are being honored for the first time in their careers.

"These are all great individual players, but they also were great team players," said head coach Iain Byrne. "To have five players nominated really shows the strength of the team, and they were a huge reason for our success this year."

Somow started 17 games for Oneonta and led the team with 21 points, scoring seven goals and a team-high seven assists. He was tied for third in the conference in assists, eighth in points and 12th in goals. The senior recorded three game-winning goals in conference play, including one in the 89th minute against Morrisville.

Prosperi started 12 of the 13 games he appeared in and led Oneonta with eight goals for 16 points. Despite the limited number of games, he was 10th in the SUNYAC in goals and 12th in points. Prosperi netted a pair of game-winners in the regular season against Cortland and New Paltz.

Masucci started in 17 games as a midfielder for Oneonta and finished the season with one goal and two assists for four points. The senior scored his goal on Senior Day in a 3-0 win against Canton.

Marques and Matute started most of the season in the defensive backline for the Red Dragons. The group forced opponents to nine shutouts this season and limited teams to 0.78 goals, 9.9 total shots and 4.6 shots on goal per game. Offensively, Marques had three goals and one assist for seven points. He had two game-winning goals against Utica and Canton.

The group helped lead Oneonta to an 11-3-4 season, 7-2 in conference play, and an appearance in the SUNYAC semifinals.
