BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team scored the game-tying goal with less than two minutes to play to force overtime at Brockport, however the Golden Eagles took the game in double overtime, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play. Graduate Student
Erin Clark (Somers, N.Y./Somers) was involved in each Red Dragon goal as she scored twice, including the game-tying goal, and assisted sophomore
Alexandra Howell (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) on the other score. The result moved Oneonta to 7-6 on the season and Brockport to 11-3 overall.
Despite the Red Dragons putting pressure on the opposing keeper early in the contest, the Golden Eagles got on the board first at 11:56 with a goal by Kelsey Zehr. Each team had one shot on goal in the second period as they held each other to a stalemate heading into halftime. Sophomore
Abigail Draper (Remsen, NY/Holland Patent) had a shot at 26:15 that was saved by Ella Buchanan while Zehr looked for her second score in the closing minutes of the half, but it was defensively saved by junior
Gabby Alfinito (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland).
Clark tied the game at 38:00 off a penalty stroke. Freshman
Skyler Van Wormer (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) was tracking the loose ball in the shooting circle for an open shot on goal and was tripped up by the keeper, Buchanan. Clark ripped the penalty stroke shot into the left side of the cage, then the Red Dragons took a 2-1 lead at 43:14 off a penalty corner. Van Wormer took the corner and pushed it in front to graduate student
Michaela Maniscalco (Northport, N.Y./Northport). Maniscalco worked the ball along the shooting circle to Clark and she passed it to Howell who stepped it and fired the ball that went off a defender's stick and into the cage for her 10th goal of the season.
Paige Thowe tied the game, 2-2, at 49:38 off a pass from Tiffany Andres, then Zehr scored off a penalty stroke to give Brockport a 3-2 edge at 54:32. With less than two minutes to go, at 58:07, Oneonta moved the ball down the field and passed it into the shooting circle to Howell, where she was tripped up by Buchanan and awarded a penalty stroke. Clark took the penalty stroke and forced the game into overtime with a low shot into the right side of the cage, her fifth goal of the season.
After neither team could find the back of the goal in the first overtime period, Brockport's Samantha Choate scored the game-winner off a penalty corner at 72:10 in the double overtime period.
Junior
Maura Leib (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) finished with 11 saves for the Red Dragons, Draper recorded a defensive save alongside Alfinito, while Buchanan ended with 12 saves for the Golden Eagles. Brockport outshot Oneonta, 22-18 overall, 17-15 on goal, and held a 16-5 advantage on penalty corners.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday, October 19, for their Senior Day against Cortland at 1 pm on All College Field.
