ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team fell in SUNYAC play to No. 8 Cortland, 7-1, Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. Sophomore
Alexandra Howell (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) recorded Oneonta's goal off an assist from graduate student
Erin Clark (Somers, N.Y./Somers) in the third period. The goal was Howell's 11th of the season, and it was Clark's eighth assist on the year, both lead the team in each respective category. Cortland improved to 12-1 overall and 3-0 in the SUNYAC, while Oneonta moved to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Following a scoreless first, Cortland scored twice in the second period with goals from Keirra Ettere and Gianna Trunfio for a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Cortland added two more goals to their lead to make it 4-0 in the third period before Howell scored for Oneonta at 43:50. Graduate student
Michaela Maniscalco (Northport, N.Y./Northport) sent the ball to the top of the shooting circle to Clark who dibbled towards the cage then passed it to Howell. Howell was in front of the goal when she tapped the ball to the left and shot it underneath Cortland's charging goalkeeper, Emma Morgan, for the score.
Cortland recorded three more goals in the fourth period for the 7-1 final. Ettere and Trunfio finished with two goals each.
Junior
Maura Leib (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) recorded 15 saves for Oneonta, while Morgan had one for Cortland. Cortland outshot Oneonta 31-5 and had a 7-4 advantage on penalty corners.
Throughout the day, Oneonta recognized and celebrated the careers of their seniors for Senior Day. Those recognized were,
Caitlyn Caulfield (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland),
Emilia Montgomery (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) (Emma Monty), and
Brooke Santos (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst).
Oneonta is back in action on Saturday, October 26, for a SUNYAC match at Oswego at 4 pm.
