ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team split a pair of matches in their final day of competition for the fall season, Saturday afternoon. Oneonta fell to Misericordia, 6-1, then bounced back and shutout Alfred, 7-0. Freshman
Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y./Islip) led the team and went 4-0 on the day as the Red Dragons finished the season 4-6 overall, while the Cougars moved to 3-1 and the Saxons dropped to 3-12 overall.
Oneonta 1, Misericordia 6
Misericordia won court one and two in doubles play to gain the doubles match point. On court No. 3, Cripe teamed with freshman
Jaila Killingbeck (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) for a tightly contested match against Samantha Wallitsch and Carissa Stefanski. The teams went back and forth into a tiebreaker where Cripe and Killingbeck defeated Wallitsch and Stefanski, 7-6 (7-4).
In singles play, Cripe faced Gabrielle Chantiloup on the No. 4 court. The freshman bested Chantiloup in straight sets, winning the first set, 6-1, then she took a back-and-forth second set, 7-5. The Cougars took the remaining singles courts in straight sets.
Oneonta 7, Alfred 0
Oneonta swept the doubles matches against Alfred for the doubles point. Junior
Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and sophomore
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) ran the No. 1 doubles court and defeated Becca Epping and Alyssa Seegert, 6-3. Cripe teamed up with freshman
Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) on the No. 2 court and upended Allson Windisch and Averill Hollond, 6-2. Killingbeck and junior
Kelly Hayes (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) won court No. 3 by default.
The Red Dragons kept the momentum going and took five singles courts in straight sets, and court No. 6 by default. Hayes recorded a 6-0, 6-0, double bagel victory on the No. 5 court over Sarah Bradford. Copp and Cripe each recorded a first set bagel win in their respective singles win. Copp routed Epping on the No. 2 court, 6-0, 6-1, while Cripe beat Hollond on the No. 4 court, 6-0, 6-2. Peck topped Seegert, 6-2, 6-1, on the No. 1 court, and Plue defeated Windisch on the No. 3 court, 6-1, 6-4.
Copp finished the fall season 6-3 in singles play, Peck went 5-4 on the No. 1 court, and Plue ended 5-5. As a duo Copp and Peck went 5-4 during the fall, while Hayes and Plue went 4-4.
Oneonta is on break until February 15 when they travel to Canton to take on St. Lawerence for the start of the spring season.
