ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta men's basketball team eclipsed the 100-point scoring mark for the second time this season with a 104-81 win over Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 9-9 overall and 6-5 in the SUNYAC, while the Bengals fall to 0-18 and 0-11 in conference play.Â
"I thought we played with enthusiasm tonight and I was proud of their effort," said head coach Cameron Convoer. "We still need to take better care of the ball."
Buffalo State took an 8-6 lead after a layup from Nigel Burch at 17:05. Oneonta answered with an 11-0 run to go ahead 18-8. Will Beard drained a triple at 11:37 to cut the lead to seven before freshman Daniel Penubothula (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream Central) responded with his own three-pointer.
The Bengals kept the game within single digits until a 12-0 Oneonta run pushed the lead to 37-18. A three from Remi Skvorc and then a Brendyn Cheng layup cut the lead to 14 points before senior Ryan Teaney (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) hit a triple at 3:19 to make it 43-26.Â
Oneonta continued to roll, and junior Caleb Brown (Brooklyn, NY/Uncommon Charter) scored inside to make it 49-34 with 57 seconds left in the half.Â
Junior Xavier Hill (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) scored six points in the opening three minutes of the second half to push the Red Dragons' lead to 21 points. Another pair of Hill layups extended the Oneonta advantage to 65-39.Â
Sophomore Delano Knox (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) converted an and-one to push Oneonta up 85-59, and the Red Dragons took a 31-point lead following a basket from Penubothula at 6:38. Scoring slowed down in the final minutes, but the Bengals never could gain any momentum.Â
Hill led the way with 22 points and five rebounds, while junior PJ Laidley (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Pembroke Pines Charter) added 17 points and nine rebounds. Brown finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, and a steal. Penubothula had 11 points, five boards, and a block, while sophomore Tyler Harts (Queens, NY/Sewanaka) had 10 points.Â
Oneonta shot 48.6 percent from the field and held a 52-20 rebounding advantage.Â
Burch led the Bengals with 18 points, five rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. Corcel Smallhorne had 11 points, and Skvorc scored 10.Â
Oneonta next plays at Cortland on Tues. Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m.
