Women's Tennis Wins SUNYAC Opener Over Plattsburgh State

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team secured their first win of the season and in SUNYAC play, defeating Plattsburgh State 8-1, Friday afternoon. Freshmen Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) and Hailey O'Connor (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) each recorded their first win in singles play as the Red Dragons improved to 1-1 on the season while the Cardinals moved to 2-1.

Oneonta started strong out of the gate and won all three doubles matches. Before their singles match, Peck and O'Connor teamed up and defeated Jackie Svantner and Hallie Hurwitz on the No. 3 doubles court, 8-1. Seniors Sophia Schutte (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck) and Brianna Shaw (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) kept it rolling and beat Nicole Svantner and Samantha Svantner on the No. 1 court, 8-1, and sophomore Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and senior Illana Ger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) rounded out the doubles with an 8-3 victory over Ava Carey and Jacklin Mitchell on the No. 2 court.

The Red Dragons used the momentum from the doubles play and won five of the six singles matches. Peck won in straight 6-2 sets against Carey on the No. 4 court and O'Connor bested Jackie Svantner on the No. 5 court in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Shaw had a clean performance on the No. 2 court, defeating Nicole Svantner in double bagel style, and Schutte beat Samantha Svantner on the No. 1 court, 6-1, 7-5. On the No. 3 court, Copp took the first set against Sarah Benowitz 6-2, but Benowitz forced a third set after she won the tiebreak game in the second set 8-6. In the super tiebreaker, Copp pulled away and took the match, 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 10-4.
