MADISON, NJ – The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team had their first road match of the season Saturday afternoon and defeated Drew University, 6-3. Senior
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) and freshman
Hailey O'Connor (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) won both of their matches as the Red Dragons improved to 2-1 on the season while the Rangers opened their season 0-1.
Holtermann paired up with sophomore
Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) on the No. 2 doubles court and beat Jada Worthem and Natalia Zamor, 8-4. Freshmen
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) and O'Connor defeated Elise Parisi and Riley Roesel on the No. 3 court, 8-5, to give Oneonta a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
The Red Dragons recorded the first two singles wins. Senior
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) double bageled Courtney Bresler on the No. 3 singles court, 6-0, 6-0, and Holtermann took court one in straight sets over Mary Kalorin, 7-5, 6-2.
The battle continued in singles play as the remaining four matches were split sets and needed super tiebreakers to determine the outcome. On the No. 2 court, senior
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck) won the first set 6-2 against Zamora before Zamora took set two, 6-1. In the tiebreaker, Schutte won 10-5. O'Connor dropped the first set 3-6 on the No. 6 court against Parisi then won the second set 6-3 and the tiebreaker 10-7. Copp fell in her tiebreaker on the No. 4 court, 8-10, while Peck came up just short on the No. 5 court, 9-11.
Oneonta is back in action on Tuesday when they face Oswego on the road at 4 pm.
