Box Score OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team secured a 7-2 SUNYAC win on the road against Oswego State, Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in the SUNYAC and the Lakers fell to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Oneonta got out to a 2-1 match lead after doubles play. Senior
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) and sophomore
Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) defeated Cara Campanie and Emily Lussier on the No. 1 court, 8-1, and seniors
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck) and
Illana Ger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) walked away with an 8-2 win over Alyx Sperling and Rafaela Dimitrakopoulou on the No. 2 court.
The Red Dragons kept it rolling in the singles and took five of the six matches. Holtermann defeated Campanie in straight 6-1 sets on the No. 1 court, while Schutte beat Kate Salamida on the No. 2 court, 6-2, 6-0. Following a close battle on the No. 3 doubles court, freshmen
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) and
Hailey O'Connor (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) picked up a couple wins in their singles matches. Peck took court No. 4 in straight sets over Sperling, 6-3, 6-4, and O'Connor upended Dimitrakopoulou on the No. 5 court, 6-0, 6-2. Ger capped off Oneonta's win with a victory over Lussier on the No. 6 court. After dropping the first set 4-6, Ger dominated the second set, 6-1, and went on to take the tiebreaker, 10-5.
The Red Dragons return to action tomorrow for a SUNYAC match up against rival New Paltz in West Point at 6 pm.
