ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team dropped their SUNYAC match against Cortland, 6-3, Wednesday afternoon. The overall match could have gone either way as four matches went into a set tiebreaker. Following the result, Oneonta moved to 4-4 on the season and 2-2 in the SUNYAC, while Cortland improved to 4-2 overall and 4-1 in conference.
Oneonta only won one doubles match, though they could have won all three. On the No. 1 court, seniors
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) and
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck) defeated Karlie Cubino and Abby Madigan, 8-3. Senior
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) and sophomore
Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) were on the No. 2 court and freshmen
Hailey O'Connor (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) and
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) were on the No. 3 court where both matches came down to a set tiebreak. Cortland took each tiebreaker, 8-6, winning each match for a 2-1 lead. Â
Schutte defeated Logan Streety on the No. 2 singles court in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Shaw beat Cubino on the No. 3 court, winning the first set tiebreak, 7-6 (7-3), before a controlling 6-1 second set. Â
Holtermann had a battle on the No. 1 court against Madigan, where Madigan came away with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win. Copp's and O'Connor's singles matches had a chance to go into a third set. On the No. 4 court, Copp dropped the first set, 6-3, to Emily Morano then came up short in the second set, 7-5. O'Connor had a similar result on the No. 6 court against Preston Feurbacher, where Feurbacher took the first set 6-4 then edged out O'Connor in the second set, 7-5. Â
Some of the Red Dragons are back in action Saturday for the ITA Regionals in Geneva at 9 am.Â
