GENEVA, N.Y. -- For the first time in nine years, the SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team had three members participate in the ITA Regionals at William Smith College this past weekend. Seniors
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis),
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis), and
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck) were the individuals that represented the Red Dragons in the tournament.
In the single's bracket, Holtermann received an unfortunate draw against the tournament's top seed Joesphine Libby from University of Rochester. Libby defeated Holtermann in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Schutte also drew a tough opponent and dropped straight sets to Hamilton's Hannah Walpole in the first round, 6-2, 6-0. Libby advanced to the semifinals, while Walpole made it to the round of 16. Â
In the first round of the doubles bracket, Shaw and Schutte faced the Continentals Walpole and Priyanka Challapalli. In the pro set, Challapalli and Walpole defeated Shaw and Schutte, 8-1. Â
The Red Dragons team return to play on Thursday, October 5, against Fredonia at 6 pm at the Binghamton Tennis Center for a conference match.
