CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team fell in their conference opening match at No. 21 SUNY Cortland, 7-1, Wednesday afternoon. Freshman
Alexandra Howell (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) was the lone Oneonta scorer as the team moved to 2-5 on the season and 0-1 in the SUNYAC while Cortland improved to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Â
Keirra Ettere put Cortland up two in the first period. In the final couple minutes of the first, Cortland had a penalty stroke opportunity, but it was saved by sophomore
Maura Leib (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa). Cortland added three more in the second period for a 5-0 lead at halftime.
Oneonta got on the board halfway through the third when freshman
Sarah Stadelmann (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) hit the ball in front of the cage and, following a quick scramble for possession, Howell shot the ball in for the goal. Â
Ettere and Molly Miller scored the final two goals for Cortland in the final period.
Leib finished with 16 saves in the first three periods and sophomore
Chelsea Dodenhoff (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) played the fourth period and recorded two saves. Emma Morgan saved three shots for Cortland.
Cortland outshot Oneonta 25-4 on target and had a 9-0 advantage on penalty corners. Â
The Red Dragons return to action on Saturday for a non-conference match at Stockton at 10:30 am.
