HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team shutout Houghton, 9-0, in a non-conference road match, Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved their record to 4-3 overall while the Highlanders dropped to 0-5 on the season. Â
Freshmen
Hailey O'Connor (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) and
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) defeated Myakay Bartman and Kelsi Clapper, 8-1, on the No. 3 court. The senior pairing of
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) and
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck) secured an 8-2 win over Alexandria Leary and Arija Grant on the No. 1 court, and senior
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) teamed up with sophomore
Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) on the No. 2 court to beat Clancey Cockle and Zoe Zachery, 8-2. Â
Just like doubles, the Red Dragons dominated singles play and tallied six bagel sets. Copp and Peck recorded straight, 6-0, 6-0, sets on the No. 4 and No. 5 court, respectively. Copp double bageled Zachery while Peck blanked Bartman. On the No. 2 court, Schutte bageled Grant in set one then took the second set, 6-1, and O'Connor won in straight sets against Clapper on the No. 6 court, 6-1, 6-0. Holtermann won the No. 1 court against Leary in straight 6-1 sets and Shaw completed the shutout with a 6-3, 6-1 victory on the No. 3 court versus Cockle.
The Red Dragons are back in action tomorrow for the Battle of the Red Dragons against Cortland at 4 pm on Dr. Heissan's Courts.
