ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team had five members selected to the 2022-23 Academic All-District® Softball Team, chosen by the College Sports Communicators (CSC). The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. Senior
Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park), juniors
Sara Cartier (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse),
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville), sophomores
Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) and
Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla) were the five Red Dragons selected for the honor.
Brennan was the number two starter for the Red Dragons, starting 15 of the 22 games she appeared in. She pitched five complete games, totaling 89.2 innings, 32 strike outs, and had a 3.75 ERA for a 5-6 record. Brennan is an early childhood education major with a 3.95 cumulative GPA.
Cartier started 25 of 33 games this season, mainly playing in the outfield for Oneonta. She was second on the team with a .392 batting average, hit four doubles, three triples, 18 RBI and scored 17 times. Cartier is a biology major with a 3.61 GPA.
Dionisio was the team's number one starter this season and started 21 of 24 games she appeared in. She threw five complete games in 105.1 innings, struck out 60 and had a 5.12 ERA for a 6-11 record with one save. Dionisio is an early childhood education major with a 3.63 GPA.
Nagel started all 41 games for the Red Dragons at second base. She batted .289 with eight doubles and three triples, totaled 22 RBI and scored 14 times. Nagel is an adolescent education major with a 3.85 GPA.
Serena was the starting catcher and designated player for Oneonta, starting 40 of the 41 games she played in. She batted .389 with a .618 slugging percentage, hit 18 doubles, four home runs, 35 RBI and scored 27 times, leading to an All-SUNYAC first team selection. Serena is an exercise science major with a 3.69 GPA.
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second-, and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 6.
