Red Dragons Fall Short to Cardinals in SUNYAC Doubleheader

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The Oneonta softball team dropped a pair of SUNYAC games to Plattsburgh on the road, Saturday afternoon. Oneonta held a 3-1 lead in game one before Plattsburgh scored three runs in the fifth to take the game, 4-3. The Red Dragons came back from a three-run deficit to tie game two, then the Cardinals scored the game-winning run in the sixth for another 4-3 final. The results moved Oneonta's record to 10-22 this season, 8-4 in the SUNYAC, and Plattsburgh to 12-15 overall and 6-6 in conference play.

Freshman Ella Kean (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) finished the twin bill 4-for-7 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior Abigail Silliman (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) ended the day 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs, while sophomore Tatum Passonno (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) went 3-for-5 with an RBI double. Senior Jaime Cardello (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) went 2-for-4 with a run in the first game, then she recorded an RBI in game two.

Game One: Oneonta 3, Plattsburgh 4
After a scoreless first three innings of game one, Oneonta put three runs up on the board in the top of the fourth inning. E. Kean and Cardello led the inning off with back-to-back singles. Two outs later, Passonno smacked a double down the left field line and scored Kean while Cardello advanced to third. Silliman then stepped into the batter's box and poked a two-run single to left field that brought in Cardello and Passonno.

Plattsburgh got one run back in the bottom half of the fourth with an RBI single from Maya Weinerman.

The Red Dragons were looking to add to their lead as they got runners on second and third in the top of the fifth, but the Cardinals got out of the jam with a fly out to end the inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Plattsburgh pieced together a three-run rally with two outs to take a 4-3 lead. Sara Isaacs hit an RBI single, then Weinerman hit a two-run single up the middle.

Oneonta had the tying run in scoring position with two outs in the top of the sixth, however Plattsburgh ended the threat with a pop up. The Red Dragons had one more chance in the seventh inning when Kean reached first on a two-out single, but the Cardinals closed out the game with a fly out on the next at-bat.

Kean went 3-for-4 with a double and a run in the game, while Passonno was 2-for-2 with an RBI double. Silliman went 1-for-2 with two RBI, and Cardello was 2-for-4.

Sophomore Tanner Smith (White Plains, N.Y./Vahalla) (1-5) was tagged with the loss after pitching to three batters in the middle of the fifth inning, allowing one run on three hits. Senior Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) started the first 4.0 innings, struck out four batters, and allowed one run on four hits. Freshman Caitlin McTiernan (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) pitched 1.1 innings, struck out two and allowed one hit.

Morgan Ormerod (6-6) received the win for Plattsburgh after pitching the complete game, striking out six, and allowing three runs on eight hits. Weinerman finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Isaacs went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs.

Game Two: Oneonta 3, Plattsburgh 4
Plattsburgh led off game two with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Cardinals scored their first off a wild pitch, before Isaacs and Weinerman hit a pair of RBI singles.

Oneonta tallied their first run in the top of the third inning and made it a 3-1 game. Silliman led the inning off with an infield single and advanced to second on junior Emily Brown's (Westbury, NY/Clarke) single to shortstop. Silliman made it to third on Kean's single to left center and crossed home off a Plattsburgh error.

The Red Dragons tied the game in the top of the fifth. With Silliman on third and sophomore Sophia Camacho (Newburgh, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) on second, Kean laid down a bunt to the third baseman and Silliman was able to slide into home before the throw got there. Camacho moved to third on the bunt, then she scored on a sacrifice fly from Cardello to tie the game at three.

In the bottom of the sixth, Plattsburgh scored the go-ahead run on a single from Glen Noll. Oneonta was unable to get the tying run on base with their final three outs.

Silliman finished game two 2-for-3 with two runs, while Brown went 2-for-4. Kean was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Torgersen (6-8) received the loss after pitching 5.1 innings, striking out five, and allowing one run on five hits.

Evelyn Paul (2-2) got the win for Plattsburgh after pitching the final 2.0 innings, allowing one hit. Cadey Wheat started the first 5.0 innings, struck out two, and allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits.

The Red Dragons are back home for their next SUNYAC doubleheader on Friday, April 24, as they host Canton starting at 3 pm at Red Dragon Softball Field.
