Softball Mercy Rules Canton Twice in SUNYAC Doubleheader Sweep

Brown Records 100th Career Hit as Red Dragons Boost Conference Record to 10-4

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta softball team overpowered, and mercy-ruled Canton in both games of their SUNYAC doubleheader, Friday afternoon at Red Dragon Softball field. Oneonta jumped out to a double-digit lead early in game one for a 16-1 win in five innings, then they shutout Canton in game two for an 8-0 victory in six innings. The conference sweep improved the Red Dragons to 12-22 this season, 10-4 in the SUNYAC, and the Roos dropped to 2-22 overall, and 1-13 in league play.

Sophomore Kayla Kean (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) went 3-for-4 in game one with a home run and two doubles for four RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Sophia Camacho (Newburgh, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) finished the twin bill 3-for-5 with an inside the park home run, four RBI, four runs scored, and four stolen bases. Freshman Ella Kean (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) ended the day 5-for-7 with two RBI, while senior Emily Brown (Westbury, NY/Clarke) went 3-for-6 with two doubles and a triple, two RBI, and scored five runs. In game two's victory, Brown recorded her 100th career hit.

Game One: Oneonta 16, Canton 1 (5 Innings)
Canton scored the first run of game one on a wild pitch. Oneonta responded with seven runs in the bottom of the first to take a 7-1 lead. Brown brought in the first run with an RBI-double to left field. E. Kean brought in Brown with an RBI-single through the left side, before she and senior Jaime Cardello (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) scored on a double from K. Kean. With runners on the corners, senior Abigail Silliman (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) smacked a tripled down the right field line to bring in K. Kean and freshman Kendall Ward (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor). The Red Dragons gave themselves a six-run lead with an RBI single from sophomore Tatum Passonno (Latham, N.Y./Shaker).

Oneonta extended their lead to 12-1 with five runs in the second inning. After E. Kean worked a walk, she scored off a throwing error from the Roos. K. Kean then blasted a home run over the left field wall for her second home run this season, the fifth of her career. Following a single from Ward and a double from Silliman, Camacho roped the ball over the center fielder's head, and the ball went towards the wall. Camacho used her speed and made it all the way around the bases for a three-run inside the park home run to give the Red Dragons an 11-run advantage.

In the bottom of the third inning, Cardello hit a sacrifice fly to center to increase Oneonta's lead to 12. The Red Dragons made it 14-1 when K. Kean belted a double to right center and scored E. Kean. Oneonta totaled two more runs in the fifth inning when a Canton throwing error allowed the Red Dragons to score two more for the 16-1 final.

K. Kean finished game one 3-for-4 with a home run and two doubles, four RBI, and two runs scored. Silliman ended the game 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, two RBI, and two runs. Camacho was 2-for-2 with three RBI and three runs scored, while both E. Kean and Passonno went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Senior Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) (7-8) pitched the complete game victory for Oneonta, struck out seven batters, and allowed one run on two hits.

Bridgette Fox (0-8) was tagged with the loss after pitching 2.1 innings, striking out one, and allowing 14 runs, nine earned, on 12 hits.

Game Two: Oneonta 8, Canton 0 (6 Innings)
The Red Dragons got game two started with three runs in the second inning for a 3-0 lead. Camacho led the inning off with a walk, stole second and third, then scored on a grounder from Brown. E. Kean followed Brown with a triple to right field and was brought in with Cardello's single to right field. Oneonta made it a three-run game when freshman Kendall Ward (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) worked a bases loaded walk and scored Cardello.

In the bottom of the second inning, Brown recorded her 100th career hit with a double to left field to get on base, then she capitalized on a Canton error and scored to increase Oneonta's lead to 4-0.

During the third inning, the Red Dragons made it a 6-0 run game. Sophomore Anna Spicciatie (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) crossed home for the first run, then Camacho laid down a perfect bunt and allowed Ward to score.
Sophomore Emma Moore (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) hit a sacrifice fly to right and scored Brown to extend the Red Dragons lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth.

Oneonta put the game away in the sixth inning for the mercy-rule victory. After Brown led off the inning with a triple, K. Kean blasted the ball to right center to score Brown for the 8-0 final.

E. Kean finished game two 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, and an RBI. Moore ended the game 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Brown went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and RBI. Camacho was 1-for-3 with an RBI and three stolen bases.

Sophomore Bridget Barry (East Patchogue, N.Y.) (2-1) pitched the complete game, struck out two batters, and allowed three hits.

Arianna Steele (0-4) received the loss after pitching the complete game, striking out two, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 11 hits.

The Red Dragons are back in action on Sunday, April 26, against Oswego for Senior Day in a SUNYAC doubleheader starting at 12 pm.
