McTiernan and Barry Combine for No-Hitter in Game Two of Softball's Doubleheader Sweep at Potsdam

Red Dragons Record 27 Runs, Toss Combined No-No for Two Wins Against Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y. -- The Oneonta softball team put on a clinic in their SUNYAC twin bill sweep at Potsdam Friday afternoon, totaling 27 runs in the pair of five-inning, mercy ruled games, while the pitchers threw a three-hit shutout in game one and a combined no-hitter in game two. The Red Dragons defeated the Bears 9-0 in game one, then they scored 13 runs in the first inning and had 14 different players record a hit for their 18-0, no-hit, victory in game two. The two wins improved Oneonta's record to 10-20 this season, 8-2 in the SUNYAC, and dropped Potsdam's to 9-15 overall, 2-8 in conference play.

Freshman Caitlin McTiernan (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) and sophomore Bridget Barry (East Patchogue, N.Y.) were in the circle for the team's game two no-hitter. McTiernan started the first 3.0 innings, struck out four batters and walked one, then Barry threw the final 2.0 innings and only allowed one batter on with a hit by pitch.

It is the ninth no-hitter in program history, the first since April 4, 2025, when junior Emily Brown (Westbury, NY/Clarke) threw one against Canton. Barry and McTiernan no-no is the second combined no-hitter in Oneonta history. The first was thrown by Amy Herba and Kaci Cunningham, who no-hit Potsdam on April 16, 2004.

"Great team wins, they showed up ready to play, and the scores reflected that," said Interim Head Coach Catherine Johnson. "Congrats to McTiernan and Barry for a combined no hitter!"

Senior Jaime Cardello (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) finished the day 4-for-4 with a double and four RBI, while Brown ended 3-for-5 with three doubles and four RBI. Sophomore Kayla Kean (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) went 4-for-5 on the day with three doubles and two RBI, and freshman Ella Kean (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) was 4-for-8 with three RBI and a stolen base. Freshman Eva Blaney (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) went a combined 4-for-6 with two RBI, and sophomore Emma Moore (Walden, N.Y./Valley Central) finished the twin bill 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

Game One: Oneonta 9, Potsdam 0 (5 Innings)
Oneonta jumped out to a lead early in game one with two runs in the first inning. Sophomore Sophia Camacho (Newburgh, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) hit a one-out single to center field and was brought home with a double from Brown. With two outs in the inning, Cardello lined a single to center field and scored Brown.

The Red Dragons extended their lead to seven with five runs in the top of the second. After K. Kean scored on a fielding error, Blaney roped a single to center and brought in sophomore Riley McDonnell (Melville, N.Y./Walt Whitman), then sophomore Tatum Passonno (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) crossed home on a fielder's choice. Oneonta made it 7-0 with back-to-back RBI singles from E. Kean and Cardello.

Oneonta added two more runs in the fifth inning for the 9-0 final. Moore laced a two-out RBI single to left field, then she scored on a fielding error during senior Abigail Silliman's (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) at-bat.

Senior Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) (6-7) earned the win for Oneonta after pitching 4.0 innings, striking out four batters and allowing two hits. The Bears struggled offensively and were only able to get a runner in scoring position with one out in the first and fourth innings, but Torgersen got out of both jams with three strikeouts and a fly out. Sophomore Tanner Smith (White Plains, N.Y./Vahalla) pitched the final inning, struck out one, and allowed a hit.

Cardello ended game one 3-for-3 with two RBI. Blaney, Camacho, Brown, and E. Kean all went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Moore was 1-for-1 with an RBI.

Same Horne (3-6) was tagged with the loss for Potsdam after pitching the complete game, striking out one, and allowing nine runs, five earned, on nine hits.

Game Two: Oneonta 18, Potsdam (5 Innings)
The Red Dragons immediately put game two out of reach with 13 runs on 13 hits in the first inning. Blaney kicked off the rally with a leadoff single to left center and scored on Brown's double to center field. E Kean laid down a bunt to reach first and bring in Camacho, then she and Brown scored on a double from Cardello. K. Kean, Moore, and Passonno hit back-to-back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 7-0. Blaney smacked an RBI single during her second plate appearance of the inning before Brown blasted her second double of the game to add two more runs to the team's lead. E. Kean singled up the middle to score Camacho, then K. Kean and Moore capped off the run with a pair of RBI singles for the 13-0 advantage.

Silliman extended Oneonta's lead to 14 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third. In the top of the fourth, McTiernan connected on a pitch for a two-run double that scored sophomore Millie Reed (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and freshman Rylee McGinness (East Quogue, NY/Westhampton Beach). The Red Dragons final two runs came from a two-run double from Reed that brought in sophomore Anna Spicciatie (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) and McDonnell.

McTiernan (2-8) earned the win in the game two no-hitter, pitching the first 3.0 innings and striking out four batters. Her lone walk came in the first inning with two outs. Barry pitched the final 2.0 innings and allowed her lone base runner to reach on a hit by pitch with two outs in the fourth.

Oneonta had 14 different players combined for 23 hits, which included nine doubles. E. Kean was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a stolen base. Blaney and K. Kean both went 3-for-3 and scored two runs, as K. Kean totaled two RBI and Blaney had one. Brown was 2-for-2 with three RBI, while both Moore and Reed finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Cardello and McTiernan each had a hit with two RBI, and both Passonno and Silliman recorded a hit and an RBI.

Emily Birmingham (5-7) was tagged with the loss after facing nine batters and allowing nine runs, eight earned, on eight hits without recording an out. Horne pitched 3.0 innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on nine hits. Chloe Huttruff tossed the final 2.0 innings, struck out one, and allowed four runs on six hits.

The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday, April 18, for a SUNYAC twin bill at Plattsburgh starting at 12 pm.
