BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team are making their fifth straight appearance in the SUNYAC Championship after they defeated Cortland in the semifinals, 5-3, Friday afternoon at the Binghamton Tennis Center. The Red Dragons will face New Paltz in the final tomorrow at 1 pm, after the No. 1 seeded Hawks defeated Geneseo, 5-0. Â
Juniors
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) and
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) set the tone for the match, defeating Abby Madigan and Vyda Van Denburg on the No. 2 doubles court, 8-1. After Cortland took court three to tie the match, senior
Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) and junior
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) defeated Logan Streety and Diana Kozenyatko on the No. 1 court, 8-4, to give Oneonta the edge heading into singles play. Â
Holtermann kept the momentum going in Oneonta's favor and took the No. 1 singles court against Kozenyatko in double bagel fashion, 6-0, 6-0. On the No. 4 court, Karen had a controlling victory in straight sets over Van Denburg, 6-1, 6-2, and Schutte recorded the match-clinching point on the No. 2 court versus Madigan, 6-3, 6-4, for the 5-3 match final. Shaw's match on the No. 3 court against Streety went unfinished, however Shaw was ahead 6-4, 3-2. Â
Oneonta has faced New Paltz in the past four SUNYAC finals, winning the title for the first time in program history last year.Â
