Women's Tennis Bested in SUNYAC Finals, Three Red Dragons Named to All-Tournament Team

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team fell to New Paltz in the SUNYAC Championship, 5-0, Saturday afternoon. Juniors Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis), Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis), and senior Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) were named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team. Holtermann was recognized in the 2nd singles, Shaw in the 3rd singles, and Karen in the 4th singles.

The Hawks took both the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles courts, 8-1. Junior Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) and Shaw were down 2-7 on the No. 2 court when they started to piece together a rally. Schutte and Shaw won the next four games, but Onalee Batcheller and Tatiana Barnett stopped the late run to win the match 8-6.

New Paltz won the match on the No. 5 and No. 6 singles courts. Prior to the match being called, Karen was one game away from a double bagel victory against Barnett on the No. 4 court, while Holtermann and Shaw were both up a set in their respected matches. Holtermann was up 1-0 in the match on the No. 2 court after a 6-1 set win against Batchelle, and Shaw won her first set 7-5 versus Loretta Donovan on the No. 3 court.
