Women's Tennis Falls on Senior Day to RIT, 5-4

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team concluded the regular season in a battle against RIT, but ultimately fell short, 5-4, Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons finished the regular season 8-14 while the Tigers moved to 5-11. Throughout the day, the Red Dragons recognized and celebrated the careers of seniors Madelyn Brophy (Greenwich/Greenwich Central), Jessica Harris (Cobleskill/Academy of Holy Names), and Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) for Senior Day.

Juniors Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) and Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) prevented the sweep in the doubles matches on the No. 2 court, defeating Abby Murray and Gabby Donohue, 8-5.

Oneonta took three of the singles matches against RIT. Schutte bested Jackie Drozd in her singles match on the No. 2 court in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Brophy won her first set against Devon Mills, 6-2, on the No. 6 court before she battled to win the second set for the match victory, 7-5. Karen dropped the first set versus Murray, 6-1, on the No. 4 court, but forced a third set after winning set two, 6-3. In the tie breaking set, Karen came out on top with a 6-3 set win.

The Red Dragons are back in action for the SUNYAC tournament on Friday at the Binghamton Tennis Center. Oneonta, the two seed, will take on third seeded Cortland in the semifinal round. Back in the fall when these teams met, Oneonta defeated Cortland, 6-3. The winner of this match will play in the SUNYAC championship against the winner of the first seed New Paltz and the fourth seed Geneseo.
