ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team wrapped up the 2023 season splitting a dual match doubleheader on their Senior Day, Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons defeated Oswego State, 8-1, before they fell to RIT, 1-8, concluding the season winning four of their final six matches for an 8-12 overall record.
Throughout the day the Red Dragons recognized and celebrated the careers of seniors
Jacob Dornsife (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant),
August LePique (New York, NY/Columbia), and
Mason Spottek (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley) for Senior Day.
Oneonta swept Oswego in the doubles matches, dropping only three games. Junior
Joshua Mann (East Greenbush/Columbia) and sophomore
Noah Khair (New Delhi, INDIA/National Institute of Open Schooling) shut out Liam Reira and Raymond Paull on the No. 3 court, 8-0. LePique and freshman
William Schmid (Yonkers/Salesian HS) defeated Antony Marcano and Ethan Bannochie, 8-1, on the No. 2 court, and Dornsife and Spottek beat Austin Davis and Anthony Salerno on the No. 1 court, 8-2.
Oneonta recorded nine, 6-0, bagel sets in the singles matches as LePique, Spottek, and Khair each secured double bagel victories. LePique defeated Davis on the No. 2 court, Spottek blanked Salerno on the No. 3 court, and Khair walked away with the shut out win over Paull on the No. 5 court.
Schmid posted a 6-0 first set win against Bannochie then took the second set, 7-6, after winning the tie breaker, 7-4, on the No. 4 court. Dornsife had to battle in a tie breaker to take the first set, 7-6 (11-9), on the No. 1 court versus Marcano, then he took the second set in bagel style, 6-0, winning the match in straight sets.
In the Red Dragons match against the Tigers, LePique defeated Christian Berko on the No. 2 court in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, for Oneonta's match point.
Dornsife went into two tie breakers in his match against Brennan Bull on the No. 3 court, however Bull came out taking both sets, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4). Spottek dropped the first set on the No. 1 court against Grahith Movva, 6-4, but forced a 10-point tiebreaker with a commanding 6-2 second set win. Movva ended up taking the tie breaker in a back-and-forth match, 11-9.
Prior to the singles matches, Dornsife and Spottek battled against Movva and Berko on the No. 1 court in doubles play. The match went down to the wire and into a tie breaker where Movva and Berko took the match, 8-7 (7-2).
Along with the 8-12 overall finish, Oneonta closed out NJAC play 2-2 for a third-place finish in the East Division with victories over Rutgers-Camden and Ramapo.
