ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta women's lacrosse team never relinquished the lead in a 19-7 win over Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 3-5 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Bengals fall to 3-5 and 0-2 in the conference.Â
The Red Dragons scored less than a minute in when junior Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. Buffalo State won the ensuing draw control, but the Bengals turned the ball over, and junior Erynn Rocovich (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) scooped up the ground ball. Senior Megan Foiles (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) then chipped the shot in to push the Oneonta lead to 2-0.Â
Buffalo State's Sarah Fineour scored after the Bengals won the draw control. However, the Red Dragons immediately with three straight goals from junior Marissa Evans (Jamesville, NY/LaFayette), junior Margaret Bryne, and Mancini to go ahead 5-1. Sophomore Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, NY/Hampton Bays) found the back of the net off a free position at 1:43, and Oneonta added one more from Bryne to make it 7-2 heading into the second quarter.Â
Foiles scored early in the second and then assisted on a Mancini goal to push the Oneonta lead to seven. Buffalo State scored on a women-up to make it 10-3. Bryne netted a goal on a free position, and then junior Ana Stiso (Latham, NY/Shaker) assisted on a score from sophomore Ellie Downey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) to continue to build the Red Dragons' lead. Foiles added one more before the half to make it 12-3.Â
The Bengals scored twice early in the second half to make it 13-5. Junior Jaclyn Jackowski (Commack, NY/Commack) caused a turnover at 11:11 which led to a Mancini goal. Buffalo State nearly scored off a Fineour shot at 9:29, but junior Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) made the save. Sophomore Mason Benvenuto (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) scored a goal at 8:53 to give Oneonta a ten-goal lead.Â
The Red Dragons scored three more times in the fourth and secured a comfortable victory.Â
Foiles led the team with six points on five goals and one assist, while Mancini finished with four goals. Bryne recorded a hat trick, while Bryne and Moore each had two goals. Rocovich grabbed five groundballs.Â
Fineour led the Bengals with three goals, while Lauren Rinow had two goals and an assist.
Gallagher made seven saves in goal.Â
Beth Kulikowski made 12 stops in goal for Buffalo State.Â
Oneonta next travels to face Cortland on Tue. Apr. 4 at 4 p.m.
