PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -Â Junior Frankie Williams (Bronx, NY/Fannie Lou) netted a season-high 28 points to help the Oneonta men's basketball to an 86-76 win over Plattsburgh (10-14, 6-11 SUNYAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons (17-8, 13-5 SUNYAC) secure the No. 4 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament and host New Paltz on Tues. Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. Additionally, senior Joseph Bull (Bronx, NY/Mount St. Michael Academy) grabbed 13 rebounds to break the Oneonta career record with 709.
"Joe Bull is amazing," said head coach Cameron Conover. "He had 13 rebounds with one hand, and tonight he put himself in the record books. He became the first player in Oneonta men's basketball history to record 700 rebounds. It shows how much he wants to win, and I'm proud of him."Â
The Cardinals looked to play a spoiler as they took an early 5-0 lead against the Red Dragons. Freshman Delano Knox (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) scored inside, and then sophomore Dylan Craft (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) made a layup to cut the lead to one. Another Knox layup started an 8-0 run with the first-year scoring two more times in that span. Plattsburgh fought back and tied 12-12 following a triple from Myles Jones. Another 8-0 Oneonta run with four points from Williams built the lead to 25-19. Freshman Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds) hit a jump shot at 3:49 to push the Red Dragons' advantage to seven, but Plattsburgh's Darren Wright drained a three-pointer to make it a four-point game. Back-to-back layups from Craft pushed Oneonta ahead 35-29 with 2:37 left in the first half.Â
"Different guys keep stepping up, and it is great to see," stated Conover. "I'm proud of the players' effort."
Sheriff Conteh scored on the fastbreak, but the Red Dragons closed out the half with a layup and triple from Tyler Harts (Queens, NY/Sewanaka) to lead 42-33 at the break.Â
Oneonta took a nine-point lead at 14:07 following a Harts' layup. Then scores from Williams, Knox, and Ryan Reaney gave the Red Dragons their largest lead at 56-44. The Cardinals hung around and used a 7-2 span to cut the lead to four points. Oneonta held the lead for the remainder of the game, and Williams made eight free throws in the final three minutes to help secure the win.Â
Williams led the Red Dragons in scoring and grabbed nine rebounds with two assists and two blocks. Castillo finished with a career-high 17 points, while Craft netted a career-best 14 points with eight rebounds. Knox also earned a career-high of ten points.Â
Jones led Plattsburgh with 24 points, while Conteh scored 18.
