Four Men's Soccer Members Garner All-Region Honors

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The United Soccer Coaches released their division III men's soccer All-Region teams, Tuesday afternoon, and the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team had four players selected. Senior John Bernardi (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and sophomore Ali Somow (Utica, N.Y./Proctor) were named All-Region first team, senior Ian Zingaro (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) was tabbed second team, and sophomore Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) made the third team.

This is the second time Bernardi and Zingaro were named All-Region, both made first team and second team, respectively, last season.

"Finishing the year as the second-best team in the region, it was only natural we would have individual players rewarded with All Regional recognition," said head coach Iain Byrne.

Earlier this season, all four individuals were named SUNYAC All-Conference. Bernardi and Somow made the first team, Zingaro earned second team and Mancias Magana was named third team.

Bernardi was also awarded the SUNYAC Fred Holloway Defensive Player of the Year this year as he helped Oneonta hold their opponents to 9.0 total shots and 0.73 goals per game. He started 21 games, played 1,842 minutes, the third most on the team, and recorded three goals and an assist for seven points.

Somow started 21 games for the Red Dragons. He finished the year with six goals, four game-winners, and eight assists for 20 points, the second most on the team.

Zingaro started all 22 games for Oneonta and logged 1,872 minutes, the second most on the team. He finished the season tied for the second most assists on the team with five and tallied four goals, including two game-winners, for 13 points.

Mancias Magana played 21 games and started 16 for the Red Dragons. He ended the year with six goals and five assists for 17 points, the third most points on the team.

"These are all great individual players, but they are also team leaders, and are a huge reason for our success this year," Byrne stated.

Oneonta finished the season 15-4-3 overall and made it to the second round of the NCAA men's soccer tournament.
