UTICA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team picked up a 7-2 road win over Utica University, Wednesday afternoon. Freshman
Rhiannon Axtmann (Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) recorded her first collegiate victory in the No. 3 doubles match. The Red Dragons improved to 7-5 on the season while the Pioneers dropped to 3-7 overall. Â
Oneonta started the match strong and took all three doubles matches. Axtmann paired up with senior
Illana Ger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) and defeated Callie Ott and Lindsey Tiedemann, 8-6, for her first win. Seniors
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) and
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck) ran the No. 1 court and walked out with an 8-3 win over Ellen Lyga and Isabella Bonapace. Freshmen
Hailey O'Connor (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) and
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) dominated the No. 2 court and beat Paetra Heeren and Selma Dizarevic, 8-1.
In singles play, the Red Dragons took four of the six matches. Holtermann defeated Lyga on the No. 1 court in straight 6-2 sets. Schutte recorded a bagel first set in her win against Heeren on the No. 2 court, 6-0, 6-1. O'Connor took the No. 4 court over Ott, 6-3, 6-3, and sophomore
Kelly Hayes (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) bested Victoria Elefante, 6-1, 6-3, on the No. 6 court.
The Red Dragons wrap up the fall season on Sunday with a tri-match at King's College for a couple matches against the Monarchs and Misericordia starting at 9 am.
