POTSDAM, N.Y. -- The No. 15 SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team scored a couple goals in each half as they picked up a 4-0 conference win on the road against Potsdam, Tuesday afternoon. Senior
Ian Zingaro (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) finished with three assists and sophomore
Joe Holder (Greenwood Lake, N.Y./Warwick) scored a brace in the victory. The Red Dragons improved to 11-2 on the season and 4-2 in the SUNYAC, while the Bears dropped to 3-8-1 overall and 0-7 in the conference. Â
"That's another good road win in the conference, and should give us confidence heading into the Fredonia match this weekend," head coach
Iain Byrne stated.
After slowly building momentum through the start of the match, Oneonta broke the scoreless tie in the 30th minute. Freshman
Adrian Matute (Islip, N.Y./Islip) gained possession for the Red Dragons at midfield and passed the ball to Zingaro. Zingaro created some space from his defender and chipped it forward into the box for sophomore
Ali Somow (Utica, N.Y./Proctor). Somow got a touch on the ball, side-stepped away from the charging Potsdam goalie, Ian Schwartz, and scored the open shot. Â
Oneonta kept the ball on Potsdam's side of the field and extended their lead in the 36th minute. The Bears were trying to clear the ball out of the box, but multiple Red Dragon defenders blocked each attempt. On the last attempt, the ball bounced just outside of the penalty area towards the sideline where Zingaro tracked it down and sent a centering pass in front of the net to Holder for the goal. Â
Sophomore
Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) made it a three-goal game in the 60th minute. Freshman
Erik Popp (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay Senior HS) had the ball at midfield and found Magana near the sideline. Magana found some open space in the middle of the field, cut towards the top of the penalty arc and fired it to the left side of the net past Schwartz for the goal. Â
Less than a minute after Magana's goal, there was a tie up in front of Oneonta's goal between Potsdam's Peyton Snell and senior
Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker). The altercation led to Snell getting a yellow card and Hanna a red, putting junior
Jax Flugel (Rochester, N.Y./) in goal for the final 30 minutes. Â
The Red Dragons tallied one more goal in the 87th minute when Zingaro found Holder all by himself past midfield. Holder brought the ball into the box, beat Schwartz who was running towards him, and had an open shot for the goal. Â
Hanna finished with two saves in the first 60 minutes and Flugel stopped one shot in the final 30. Schwartz recorded two saves for the Bears.
Oneonta outshot Potsdam, 16-11, 6-3 on target, and both teams recorded five corner kicks.
The Red Dragons conclude their road trip on Saturday against Fredonia at 1 pm.
