BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Brockport's Tony Arnold hit the game-winning basket with one second remaining to give the Golden Eagles a 65-63 victory over the Oneonta men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons now fall to 10-5 overall and 6-2 in the SUNYAC, while the Golden Eagles move to 13-3 and 8-1 in the conference.Â
Neither team led by double digits the entire game, and there were only four lead changes. Brockport took an early 7-0 lead before senior Daniel Derice (Tampa, FL/Wesley Chapel) scored inside to break the run. Sophomore Graham Wooden (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) followed with a basket to cut the lead to five points, and then two consecutive baskets from senior Joseph Bull (Bronx, NY/Mount St. Michael Academy) put the score at 10-8. Senior Michael Ortale Jr. (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) converted a pair of free throws to tie, but the Golden Eagles continued to score to take a four-point lead.Â
With Brockport up 14-10, Oneonta answered with a 10-0 run comprised of points from Derice, Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds), and Tyler Harts (Queens, NY/Sewanaka) to take their first lead at 20-14. Brockport's Taylor scored on an and-one to cut the Red Dragons' lead to one, but freshman Delano Knox (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) sank a triple at 4:54 to make it 23-19. Oneonta held a narrow lead, and then Bull hit a three-pointer to push the Red Dragons' lead to five. Jahidi Wallace scored two straight layups in the final minute, but a pair of free throws by Castillo made it 31-29 at the half.Â
Oneonta used a 6-0 run with a Wooden three-pointer and an Ortale fastbreak layup to take a 41-34 lead at 15:38. Bull gave the Red Dragons their largest lead at nine points following a jumper at 11:26. Brockport capitalized on free throws to fight their way back into the game. Zachary Rice scored three consecutive points to make it 50-46, and then a triple from Mekhi Beckett cut the Oneonta lead to three points. The Golden Eagles eventually tied 57-57 following another Beckett triple with four minutes remaining.Â
At 1:24, Ortale put Oneonta up 63-61 following a layup. Arnold was fouled twice in the final minute and was able to tie 63-63 with 11 seconds remaining. He missed his second attempt, but David Grady collected the offensive board. Following a Brockport timeout, Arnold scored inside with one second left to give the Golden Eagles the win.Â
Bull led Oneonta with his tenth double-double of the season behind 19 points and 14 rebounds. He shot 8-of-19 and also had a block and a steal. Derice added nine points, while Ortale had eight.
Wallace scored 17 points for Brockport, and Arnold netted 14. Beckett finished with 11 points with three three-pointers.Â
Oneonta is back home next when they host Oswego on Fri. Jan. 20 at 4 p.m. in Dewar Arena. Â
