ONEONTA, N.Y. -- After a scoreless first half, senior
Lucas Fecci (Somers/Somers) found the net twice as the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team defeated Union College 3-0, Tuesday afternoon. The win brings the Red Dragons to 2-0 on the season and drops the Dutchmen to 1-1-1. Â
"We scored some nice goals from open play today and it's good to see players getting off the mark," said Head Coach
Iain Byrne. "The second half became a bit scrappy but it's a good performance going into the Mayor's Cup."
Following the scoreless first half of play, freshman
Joesph Holder (Greenwood Lake/Warwick) got Oneonta on the board just over a minute into half two. Fecci raced towards a deflected pass and got it to junior
John Bernardi (Mahopac/Mahopac). Bernardi then sent a laser center to Holder to score off his left foot while battling a Dutchmen defender. The goal was Holder's first-collegiate goal.
Freshman
Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck/Mamaroneck) assisted on both of Fecci's goals. In the 67th minute, Mancias Magana brought the ball down into the left side of the box, took a shot on goal and was saved, but on the rebound he headed the ball towards Fecci who headed the ball into the right side of the net. Â
The game was coming to a close as Mancias Magana brought the ball up the right side of the field for one last push. Using his speed, he created space between his defender and centered it to find Fecci for the game's final goal. Â
The Red Dragons defense led by seniors
Tristan Battistoni (Pleasant Valley/Arlington),
Ethan Brunell (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), and
Malcolm Swett (Riverhead/Riverhead) held the Dutchmen in check today, allowing only one shot on goal for senior
Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) to save.
Oneonta outshot Union 14-4 and had an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks. Â
The Red Dragons are back in action this weekend for the Mayor's Cup. On Saturday, Oneonta will host St. Lawrence at 4 pm.Â
