ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Freshman
Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck/Mamaroneck) and senior
Ian Zingaro (Liverpool/Liverpool) scored their first collegiate goals as the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team defeated St. Lawrence on the first day of the 2022 Mayor's Cup, 3-2, Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 3-0-0 as the Saints fall to 2-1-1.
"St. Lawrence is always a tough opponent, and you can't get the ball off them," said Head Coach
Iain Byrne after the game. "We played great in the first half, and in the second we defended for our lives and managed to see it out."
In the 27th minute Mancias Magana got Oneonta on the board when he brought the ball into the box, shifted gears to create an opening to shoot past a defender, and beat the goalie. A few minutes went by before the Red Dragons struck again. Approaching the 34th minute Saints' goalkeeper Ben Woelfinger touched the ball illegally with his hands after it was kicked to him by a teammate, setting up an Oneonta goal kick just in front of the six-yard box. Mancias Magana gave it a little tap to put it into play before Zingaro fired the shot and scored over the wall of Saint defenders.
St. Lawrence cut the deficit in half in the 54th minute after Sam Pijpers passed to Miles Levy to score nine yards out. Oneonta answered back in the 59th minute when Zingaro free kicked near the corner to senior
Lucas Fecci (Somers/Somers) in front of the net. Fecci redirected the kick to freshman
Joesph Holder (Greenwood Lake/Warwick) for an open goal. The Saints' realized time was against them and started to pick up the pressure down two goals with 20 minutes remaining. Senior
Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) stood his ground, stopping the next four shots he faced. In the 82nd minute St. Lawrence's Max Mogul got past Hanna off a centering pass from Kyle Graber, however Oneonta shut them down for the rest of the game.
Hanna finished with four saves and Woelfinger ended with seven.
The Red Dragons outshot the Saints 14-8 and had a slight edge in corners, 3-2.
Oneonta will host Hobart on the final day of the Mayor's Cup Sunday at 4 pm.
